(Virtual) Kick-Off Meeting for the 'Living Lab Eckernförde Bay 2030' project.

Together with various stakeholders, the project partners want to develop perspectives for a sustainable utilisation of the Eckernförde Bay. By using the methods of a living lab, the ecological relationships in the bay will be investigated and the protection of marine habitats will be expanded.

The project 'Living Lab Eckernförde Bay 2030' is coordinated by the 'Center for Ocean and Society (CeOS)' at Kiel University. The project is funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU).

Wissenschaftlicher Austausch zu Boknis Eck und Eckernförder Bucht

Am 2. April 2019 trafen sich zu einem informellen Treffen am GEOMAR 26 Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmer von CAU, GEOMAR und LLUR, um sich über die Aktivitäten an der Zeitserienstation Boknis Eck und in der Eckernförder Bucht zu informieren. Die Ziele des Treffens waren

  • sich einen Überblick über laufende und geplante Projekte zu verschaffen,
  • zukünftige Kooperationen zu initiieren und
  • mögliche Strategien zur Beantragung von Fördermitteln zu diskutieren.

Die thematische Vielfalt der vorgestellten laufenden Projekte war beeindruckend und zeigte, dass die Eckernförder Bucht wohl eines der bisher am besten untersuchtesten Küstengebiete Deutschlands ist. Die Projekte reichen von regelmäßigen biologischen, chemischen und physikalischen Messungen an der Zeitserienstation Boknis Eck und in den Küstenzonen der Eckernförder Bucht, „Dual Tracer“-Experimenten zur Untersuchung des Gasaustausches, phys./biogeochem. Modellierung bis hin zu Messungen des Grundwasseraustritts und Untersuchungen der Biogeochemie von Spurenmetallen im Sediment. Darüber hinaus wurden Technologie-Projekte zu hochaufgelösten Beobachtungen von Fischen und gelösten organischen Substanzen und die geplante Installation eines neuartigen „autonomous robotic“-Netzwerkes zur Beobachtung der marinen Umwelt (Wassersäule und Sediment) vorgestellt.

Nach lebhaften Diskussionen wurde angeregt, einen wissenschaftlichen Übersichtsartikel zu schreiben, der auch eine Skizze einer zukünftigen Forschungsagenda für die Eckernförder Bucht und die Zeitserienstation Boknis Eck miteinschließt. Dies könnte als Grundlage für zukünftige Projektanträge dienen. Darüber hinaus wurde angeregt, das Treffen in einem regelmäßigen (eventuell halbjährigen) Rhythmus fortzusetzen.

New Report: What are Marine Ecological Time Series telling us about the ocean?


The International Group for Marine Ecological Time Series (IGMETS) has released its report entitled “What are Marine Ecological Time Series telling us about the ocean? A status report.” Download the full report PDF or individual sections.

This first report presents an analysis and overview of oceanic trends through the end of 2012, based on a collection of over 340 in situ marine ecological time series (incl. Boknis Eck), and supplemented with satellite-based spatio-temporal sea surface temperature and chlorophyll background fields.

New underwater observatory deployed at Boknis Eck

In December 2016 a cabled underwater observatory was successfully deployed close to the Boknis Eck time series site. The observatory sits in 14.5 m water depth and is equipped with several sensors (including CTD, ADCP, O2, CO2 and CH4) to monitor the enviornmental setting at Boknis Eck. The continuous in-situ data from the observatory complement the monthly sampling at Boknis Eck and allow the detection of short-term trends and events. Online data from the observatory can be displayed here.  The underwater observatory was developed and built in close cooperation with the Helmholtz Centre Geesthacht as part of the COSYNA project.

Um nun auch kurzfristigere Prozesse im Wasser erkennen zu können, haben das GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel und das Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht im Rahmen des COSYNA-Projektes jetzt zusätzlich ein festes Observatorium in 14,5 Metern Tiefe am Meeresboden installiert, das permanent grundlegende Messwerte erfasst. 26.6.2015/Kiel. Vor 40 Jahren, am 27. Juni 1975, wurde in Kiel der Forschungskutter LITTORINA in Dienst gestellt. Bis heute ist sie unverzichtbare Arbeits- und Ausbildungsplattform für die Kieler Meeresforschung. Mit einer Feierstunde am vergangenen Samstag, 27. Juni, haben Vertreter von Forschung, Reedereien sowie jetzige und ehemalige Besatzungsmitglieder den runden Geburtstag begangen. Ocean Sampling Day 2015

The Boknis Eck Sampling Cruise on 21 June 2015 was part of the Ocean Sampling Day 2015: The Ocean Sampling Day (OSD) is a simultaneous sampling campaign of the world's oceans and took place for the first time on the summer solstice (21 June) in the year 2014. (See also news from 23 June 2014 below.) These cumulative samples, related in time, space and environmental parameters, will provide insights into fundamental rules describing microbial diversity and function and will contribute to the blue economy through the identification of novel, ocean-derived biotechnologies. These data may provide a reference data set for generations of experiments to follow in the coming decade. It could also function as starting point for regularly coordinated future OSDs.

A first summary paper about the OSD consortium was published in GigaScience.

Sinikka Lennartz receives Annette Barthelt Prize

For her MSc with the title 'Time Series Analysis and Development of a 1D Box Model to Simulate Trace Gas Concentrations at the Time Series Station Boknis Eck, Baltic Sea', Ms Sinikka Lennartz (GEOMAR) was awarded the Annette Barthelt Prize 2015.

The Prize is awarded to honor excellent MSc or PhD thesis in marine sciences. The Prize was estabished in memory of four young students of marine sciences who died in a terrorist bomb attack in Djibouti on 18 March 1987 while waiting to embark on R/V Meteor for a cruise to the Arabian Sea. Since 1990 the Prize is awarded annually by the Annette Barthelt Foundation.

Baltic Sea: Climate change counteracts decline in eutrophication

GEOMAR scientists publish the first comprehensive analysis of the time series station Boknis Eck

Despite extensive measures to protect the Baltic Sea from anthropogenic activities since the late 1980s, oxygen concentrations continue to decrease. Rising temperatures in the bottom water layers could be the reason for the oxygen decline. This paper reports on the first comprehensive analysis of measurement data from the Boknis Eck time series station, and it was recently published by Sinikka Lennartz and colleagues in the international journal Biogeosciences.

Why so cold all of a sudden?

First glider mission in the Baltic Sea provides new insights into the coastal upwelling in Bay of Eckernförde

Gliders are autonomous measuring probes collecting data for marine research in the open ocean on predetermined courses between the sea surface and up to 1000 meters water depth. The fact that these devices can also operate precisely in the 20-meter shallow Baltic Sea was proven in an experiment by the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel at the "Boknis Eck" time series station. The data obtained here have now been published by Johannes Karstensen et al. in the international journal "Biogeosciences".

Featured article about CO2 enrichment experiment in the Eckernfoerde Bay

Journal of Plankton Research

A mesocosm experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of rising atmospheric CO2 on the build-up and decline of organic matter during coastal phytoplankton blooms. Five mesocosms (each with a volume of 38 m3) were deployed in the Eckernfoerde Bay close to the site of the Time Series Station Boknis Eck in Spring 2009. The results of the experiment have been recently published by Anja Engel and colleagues in a Featured Article of 'Journal of Plankton Research'. The download of the article (J. Plankton Res. vol. 36, pp. 641-657, 2014) is free.

The mesocosm experiment was supported by the SOPRAN project. SOPRAN stands for Surface Ocean Processes in the Anthropocene and is funded by the German BMBF.

Boknis Eck Special Issue in Biogeosciences

A collection of seven articles presenting actual results from Boknis Eck are now available in a recently published special issue of the open access journal Biogeosciences: http://www.biogeosciences.net/special_issue116.html . The articles cover a wide range of various aspects of the biogeochemical and the ecological time series measurements at Boknis Eck including the nitrogen cycle in the sediments, hard bottom and benthic foraminiferal communities, exchange processes at the sediment/water interface, pelagic productivity, and the chemical composition of the seasurface nanolayer.
